I Looked Death in the Face (And Almost Joined Him)

👩‍⚕️ Elena

OMG you guys. Today was my first cadaver lab and I am TRAUMATIZED.

Like, I thought I was prepared because I’ve watched every episode of Grey’s Anatomy twice, but NOTHING prepares you for the real thing!! I walked into that lab feeling all confident and medical-student-y, and then BAM. There’s just… a person. Right there. Not breathing.

I totally almost fainted. Like, the room started spinning and everything went white and I had to grab my lab partner’s arm. But I’m smooth, so I pretended I was just “stretching” and “getting a better angle to examine the specimen.” Pretty sure nobody bought it because I was probably green, but whatever.

The dramatic collapse

Called my mom afterward because I needed someone to tell me I wasn’t going to die, and she just laughed (LAUGHED!) and said “mija, if you can handle your Tia Rosa’s cooking, you can handle anything.” Which is actually true because Tia Rosa’s tamales could kill a small horse, but still. Not the sympathy I was looking for!

Anyway, I survived. Barely. And I have to go back tomorrow. Pray for me. Or send chocolate. Preferably both.
