The Kids Who Stay

👩‍⚕️ Elena

Just got home from my shift and I can’t stop thinking about the kids who won’t be going home for Christmas.

There’s something about the pediatric ward during the holidays that gets to me every time. The decorations try their best to make it feel festive, but underneath there’s this quiet understanding that some families are spending Christmas morning in a hospital room instead of around their tree.

I worked with this little girl today - I won’t share details, but she asked if Santa would know to find her here. Her mom looked at me with these eyes that said everything, and I promised her that Santa definitely has the hospital address.

These moments remind me why I chose this job, even when it’s hard.

Marcus made me coffee when I got home and I’m trying to process the day by writing it out. The kids and families I work with teach me something new every shift about resilience, hope, and what really matters. Tomorrow I’m back for another shift, and honestly, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
