Tamale disaster zone

Carmen showed up this afternoon with a bag of masa harina and complete confidence that we could recreate her mom’s famous tamales. “It’s easy,” she said. “Just spread, fill, fold.”

Three hours later, my kitchen looked like a flour bomb went off and we had exactly zero edible tamales to show for it. Turns out there’s a reason her mom makes it look effortless - it takes actual skill, not just enthusiasm and YouTube confidence. Carmen’s first attempt looked like a sad burrito that gave up on life. Mine resembled abstract art more than food.

The moment we both started laughing instead of trying to salvage our disasters was when I knew this was going to be one of those stories we tell for years.

Evidence of our 'success'

Evidence of our ‘success’

Jake walked in during peak chaos and just started documenting our failure for posterity. Sometimes the best cooking experiences have nothing to do with the actual cooking.

We ordered pizza and ate it surrounded by masa flour evidence. Carmen’s already planning round two for next weekend, but this time we’re recruiting her mom as backup. Smart woman.
