My Baby Started Kindergarten

This morning happened in slow motion and warp speed all at once. Sophie woke up at 6 AM (without an alarm, because of course she did) and announced she was ready for kindergarten. She’d picked out her outfit three days ago - the unicorn backpack was non-negotiable.

I held it together through breakfast, through the photos, through walking her to the bus stop. She climbed those three giant steps like she’d been doing it her whole life, turned around and waved, and that was it. My little girl was gone.

I made it exactly ten seconds after the bus pulled away before I started crying in the driveway. Thank God for baby Theo, who just looked at me like ‘Mom, you’re being weird again’ and tried to eat my earring. Five years old. She has homework now. She has a TEACHER who isn’t me. When did this happen?

Marcus keeps saying she’ll be fine. I know she’ll be fine. It’s me I’m worried about. Three hours until pickup and I’m already wondering what she’s doing right now.
