Two left feet and counting

Carmen signed us up for beginner salsa at the community center without asking. ‘Trust me,’ she said. ‘It’ll be fun,’ she said. What she didn’t mention is that salsa requires actual coordination between your feet AND your hips AND your arms, all at the same time. Who knew?

Jake came home to find me practicing the basic step in our living room, trying to figure out where I went wrong. The instructor made it look so simple - step forward, step in place, step back, step in place. Apparently my version involves a lot more flailing and at least three near-collisions with imaginary furniture.

The worst part? I actually enjoyed it. Despite tripping over my own feet twice and accidentally elbowing my poor practice partner, there’s something about the music that just makes you want to move. Carmen was naturally graceful, of course. She’s probably already planning our return next week.

Jake offered to practice with me, but I think our relationship is strong enough without adding my dance ‘skills’ to the mix. At least not until I can manage the basic step without looking like I’m having a seizure.
