Jake swore he knew a shortcut to Lake Anna. Twenty minutes of confident turns later, we’re parked on the side of what I’m pretty sure is someone’s private driveway, staring at his phone like it holds the secrets of the universe.

The original plan was simple: drive to the lake, find a decent swimming spot, maybe pack a picnic. Jake had this whole route mapped out that would “skip all the weekend traffic.” What he failed to mention was that his route also skipped most recognizable roads and apparently several key geographic features like, you know, the actual lake.

Ready for adventure (and armed with backup snacks)

Three gas station stops and two very patient locals later, we finally found water. Not exactly the pristine lake access we’d pictured, but a perfectly decent spot with actual parking and people who looked like they knew what they were doing. Jake’s already planning the “better route” for next time.

Turns out getting lost with the right person makes for a pretty good Saturday anyway. Even if his navigation skills need some work.
