Clay therapy session

Brought home my pottery homework yesterday - just a simple bowl we’re supposed to practice centering techniques on. Left it on the kitchen counter while I grabbed a shower.

Came back to find Jake poking at it with the concentration of someone defusing a bomb. ‘This stuff is harder than it looks,’ he announced, like he’d discovered some great secret of the universe.

Turns out he’d been watching YouTube videos about wheel throwing for twenty minutes. Because of course he had. So I sat down and showed him the hand positions Sarah taught us - how to support the clay without fighting it, how to feel when it wants to move.

There’s something weirdly intimate about teaching someone to work with clay. Your hands guiding theirs, both of you focused on this one small thing that could collapse at any second. We spent an hour just making wonky little pinch pots and talking about nothing important. Jake’s naturally good at it, which is annoying but not surprising. Everything comes easy to him.
