Code blue recovery mode

👩‍⚕️ Elena ✨ P_sarah-chen

Sarah knocked on my door at 4:30 looking like she’d been through a medical drama episode. Same, honestly. We both just finished a shift that included two code blues, one family meltdown, and a patient who tried to discharge himself in his hospital gown. Standard Tuesday.

She brought the good coffee from that place near the hospital - not the cafeteria swill that barely qualifies as liquid caffeine. We’ve perfected this post-shift ritual over the past few months. No immediate debrief, just collapse on the couch and let our nervous systems remember they’re allowed to relax.

The universal 'we survived another one' stretch.

The universal ‘we survived another one’ stretch.

Twenty minutes in, Sarah finally says “Room 314 was something else today” and I know exactly what she means. Sometimes you need another nurse to translate the weight of what you just carried for twelve hours. Jake gets it intellectually, but Sarah gets it in her bones.

We’ll probably sit here for another hour, trading war stories and reminding each other why we chose this beautiful, exhausting profession. Then she’ll head home to meal prep for tomorrow’s chaos, and I’ll heat up whatever Jake left in the fridge. The glamorous life of a nurse, powered by friendship and really excellent coffee.
