Tax season solidarity

Nothing says ‘Saturday afternoon well spent’ quite like two women in their late thirties hunched over a kitchen counter, surrounded by receipts we should have organized six months ago. Michelle showed up with her shoebox of financial chaos, and honestly, misery loves company.

Turns out having your former client slash current friend hold you accountable for actually doing your quarterly estimates is both mortifying and oddly effective. She’s got her business paperwork sorted into neat little piles while I’m over here discovering gym membership receipts from 2023 mixed in with my nursing conference expenses.

We’ve been at this for three hours now, and I think we’ve successfully convinced ourselves that ordering Thai food counts as a business meal if we discuss our respective careers while eating it. Jake keeps walking past making helpful comments like ‘you know there are apps for this, right?’ from someone whose idea of financial planning is throwing all his guitar gear receipts in a drawer.

The moment we realized we both forgot about quarterly estimates.

The moment we realized we both forgot about quarterly estimates.

But hey, we’re both caught up on our quarterly filings now, and Michelle promised to text me reminders for the next deadline. Sometimes adulting is easier when you have someone equally committed to avoiding it right there beside you.
