The accidental audit

👩‍⚕️ Elena ✨ Carmen

Carmen came over because I needed a second brain on the archive project budget. Margaret’s first family introduction went well — maybe too well — and now I’m looking at actual coordination costs: archival boxes, acid-free sleeves, a proper scanner, potential storage. Real numbers for a project that somehow keeps getting more real. I figured Carmen, who has strong opinions about everything, would help me think through it.

What I did not anticipate was Carmen pulling up her own banking app and saying, ‘Okay but wait, are you tracking your discretionary spending anywhere? Because I started doing this thing—’ and forty minutes later we were fully auditing both our financial lives across the breakfast bar.

Spreadsheet open. Papers everywhere. The good coffee mugs out because this felt serious.

Here’s what we found: I have been unconsciously spending more on archival supplies than I budgeted, which I knew. Carmen has been unconsciously spending more at The Grind than she realized, which she did not know. We both have a recurring subscription neither of us remembered signing up for. The archive budget situation is actually manageable if I phase the supply purchases across the next two months instead of front-loading them. Carmen’s coffee situation is, per Carmen, ‘a feature not a bug.’

Carmen: 'Look at this number.' Me: 'I see nothing.'

Carmen: ‘Look at this number.’ Me: ‘I see nothing.’

It sounds like a boring Saturday but honestly it was one of those afternoons that felt genuinely good — the kind where you’re just in someone’s kitchen being real about the unsexy parts of life. We’ve been friends long enough now that there’s no performance to it. She knows my filing system is chaotic. I know she’ll spiral-plan everything and then improvise anyway. We’ve had enough friction to know exactly where the other person bends. The archive is going to be expensive and completely worth it. Carmen is going to keep going to The Grind. Some truths are just true.
