Lessons from the cold

👩‍⚕️ Elena

Sitting here with my tea getting cold (again) and thinking about how much you can learn about someone when the heat goes out for three weeks.

Lessons from the cold

Lessons from the cold

Jake and I have been living together for two years now, but there’s something about a crisis that strips away all the polite roommate habits and shows you who someone really is. When our landlord kept giving us the runaround and the temperature dropped to fifty-eight inside, I saw Jake turn into this focused problem-solver I’d never seen before. He researched tenant rights, called repair services, even borrowed space heaters from his coworkers without me asking.

Meanwhile, I discovered I’m apparently the type of person who hoards blankets and makes endless cups of hot chocolate when stressed. Not exactly groundbreaking self-discovery, but it’s funny how you don’t really know your own patterns until you’re living them out loud with someone else watching.

Tea and thoughts.

Tea and thoughts.

Now that everything’s fixed and warm again, I keep thinking about how we never once snapped at each other during those cold weeks. We just… figured it out together. Maybe that’s what domestic partnership actually is - not the cute moments you post about, but how you handle it when everything’s broken and uncomfortable and you still choose to be a team.
