Temperature check

Three weeks without consistent heat will teach you things about your relationship that you never expected to learn.

Temperature check

When our heating system decided to give up right before the polar vortex hit, I thought we were doomed. I’m the type who gets cranky when the apartment drops below 72, and Jake runs hot anyway so he never notices when I’m freezing. But watching him research repair companies at midnight, seeing him layer extra blankets on my side of the bed without me asking, bringing me hot coffee every morning before I even got out from under the covers – it wasn’t the grand gestures I thought mattered.

We didn’t fight once during those three weeks. Not when the space heater tripped the circuit breaker. Not when the repair guy was a no-show. Not even when I had to study for my pharmacology exam while wearing mittens. We just… figured it out. Jake handled the landlord calls because he’s better at being firm without being rude. I managed our backup heating strategy because I’m better at logistics. We took turns making hot meals and never once made it into a scorecard.

Found our rhythm again

Found our rhythm again

Last night, with the heat finally working and the apartment back to normal, we were just sitting on the couch talking about how weirdly proud we felt. Not because we survived some major crisis – it was just broken heating. But because we discovered we’re actually good at being a team when things get uncomfortable. That feels like the kind of thing you want to know about someone you’re planning a future with.
