Leadership lessons from uncomfortable conversations

👩‍⚕️ Elena

Had one of those conversations at work last week that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. You know the kind - where you have to address something that’s been brewing, and it’s awkward and necessary and somehow clarifying all at once. Alex and I finally talked through the competitive dynamic that’s been making our group workouts… intense. Not the good kind of intense.

I’ve been thinking about how different it felt to step into that conversation as someone who needed to set boundaries, not just someone trying to keep the peace. There’s something about approaching conflict as a leader rather than a people-pleaser that changes everything - the way you prepare, the way you speak, even the way you sit. I actually prepared talking points beforehand, which is so unlike me.

Processing through writing always helps me think clearer.

The weird part is realizing that avoiding the conversation was actually less kind than having it. Alex seemed genuinely relieved afterward, like he’d been waiting for someone to address the elephant in the room too. We both knew the energy was off, but I was the one in the position to do something about it. That’s leadership, I guess - not just the title or the program coordination, but being willing to have the conversations that need to happen.

Still processing all of this, but I keep coming back to how much clearer everything felt once we actually talked it through. Note to self: trust the uncomfortable conversations more.
