Floor time philosophy

👩‍⚕️ Elena

Three days of replaying that conversation with the charge nurse and I finally figured out what’s been bothering me. It wasn’t that she questioned my judgment about Michelle’s discharge plan — that’s fair game. It was how she did it in front of the entire team, like I was some first-year student instead of someone who’s been building these cultural education programs for months.

Turns out there’s a difference between being collaborative and being a doormat. Who knew? I spent so much energy trying to be the team player who never rocks the boat that I forgot I actually have expertise worth defending. When I finally spoke up and asked to discuss it privately, the whole dynamic shifted. Suddenly we were colleagues problem-solving together instead of her lecturing me.

Jake found me processing all this on my yoga mat around eleven. Something about horizontal thinking just works better for me. I kept coming back to this moment when she actually listened — really listened — to my perspective on discharge planning once we moved the conversation away from an audience. Made me realize how much energy I waste managing other people’s comfort instead of just being clear about boundaries from the start.
