Been replaying that whole situation with Alex from last month, you know? The one where I finally had to shut down his competitive intensity during our team workouts.

Turns out there’s a difference between being nice and being effective. For years I thought good leadership meant keeping everyone happy, smoothing over conflicts before they got messy. But watching how our team dynamic shifted after I addressed Alex’s behavior head-on? Sometimes the kindest thing you can do is draw a clear line.

Writing it all out this morning, I realized I’ve been confusing boundaries with being mean. Setting limits isn’t about punishment – it’s about creating space where everyone can actually do their best work. Alex has been way more collaborative since our conversation, and the rest of the team seems more relaxed too.

Funny how the lessons that feel the hardest to learn are usually the ones you most needed to figure out. Now if someone could just invent a coffee that helps with the next leadership challenge, because knowing my luck, there’s probably another one coming.
