What three weeks of cold taught us

👩‍⚕️ Elena

Been sitting here thinking about those three weeks when our heat kept cutting out, and honestly? It stripped away all the polite relationship stuff we didn’t even realize we were still doing.

What three weeks of cold taught us

When you’re both exhausted from work and it’s 52 degrees in your apartment at 11 PM, there’s no energy left for the little dances couples do around whose turn it is to call the landlord or who’s better at troubleshooting or who should handle the inconvenience. We just… handled it. Together. Jake researched portable heaters while I called repair services. I made hot soup while he dealt with the landlord’s excuses. No scorekeeping, no martyrdom, just two people solving a problem.

The kitchen where we figured out how to be a team.

The kitchen where we figured out how to be a team.

The weirdest part? We were happier during those cold weeks than we’d been in months. Not because we love suffering, but because we’d accidentally discovered we’re actually really good at being on the same team when we stop overthinking it.

Three years in, and a broken heating system taught us something no relationship book ever mentioned: sometimes the best thing that can happen to a couple is a shared inconvenience that’s nobody’s fault.
