Roadside education

Sarah’s car picked the absolute worst time to start making weird clicking noises. We were literally pulling into the library parking lot when it just… gave up. Steam started coming from under the hood, which I’m pretty sure is never a good sign.

So here we are, two supposedly intelligent college students, staring at an engine like it holds the secrets of the universe. Sarah keeps pointing at different parts and saying “That doesn’t look right,” while I nod knowingly despite having zero clue what I’m looking at.

Neither of us knows what we're looking at.

Neither of us knows what we’re looking at.

Pretty sure that black thing is supposed to connect to the silver thing, but beyond that, we’re basically playing automotive charades.

The good news is that Jake’s friend Mike is coming with jumper cables, even though I tried to explain that the car isn’t dead, just… confused. Sarah called her dad, who walked her through some basic checks over the phone, which mostly involved us saying “uh-huh” and “okay” while touching random car parts. Her anatomy textbook is getting way more use as a makeshift table for her phone than for actual studying.

Update: Mike arrived, took one look under the hood, and said “Yeah, that’s not an electrical problem.” Turns out we need a real mechanic, not jumper cables. Who knew? At least our study session got moved to Sarah’s apartment, where the only thing likely to break down is my brain trying to memorize muscle attachments.
