Marcus turned 27 today and Sophie was determined to make it special. She spent an hour this morning with crayons and construction paper, creating what she calls a “happy birthday daddy card” - though it looks more like abstract art to me.

The concentration on her little face while she scribbled was everything.

I attempted a cake because that’s what good wives do, right? Let’s just say my decorating skills need work. The frosting is lopsided and the writing looks like a toddler did it (which honestly, Sophie could have done better). But Marcus lit up when he saw it, same as when Sophie handed him her masterpiece.

This is what I love about him - he genuinely treasures both the wobbly cake and the scribbled card equally. Twenty-seven looks good on him, even if my baking skills don’t look good on the cake. Here’s to another year of his genuine appreciation for our chaotic little attempts at making things special.
