Mother's Day: Expectations vs. Reality

👩‍⚕️ Elena 👨‍💻 Marcus 🎭 Sophie 🦕 Theo

You know what they don’t tell you about Mother’s Day with little kids? It’s equal parts heart-melting and absolutely chaotic. Sophie spent weeks at preschool making me a card that says “My Mom is Pritty” (I’m keeping the spelling forever), and Theo gave me the gift of his finest drool all over my favorite pink shirt.

Marcus, bless his heart, decided to make me breakfast in bed. The smoke alarm had other plans. After the third beep, I found him in the kitchen frantically waving a dish towel at the detector while explaining to Sophie that “Daddy just made the pancakes extra crispy.” We ended up eating slightly charred pancakes around the kitchen island instead, and honestly? It was perfect.

Two kids means two different kinds of Mother’s Day gifts - Sophie’s artistic masterpiece that made me ugly-cry (the good kind), and Theo’s contribution of maximum baby chaos. Both equally precious, both requiring different levels of laundry afterward. This is what real Mother’s Day looks like, smoke alarms and all.

To all the moms out there - whether you got breakfast in bed or breakfast with a side of fire department concerns, you’re doing amazing. Even if your shirt currently has mysterious stains and your pancakes taste like carbon. Especially then.
