Reading and Growing

👩‍⚕️ Elena 🎭 Sophie

Sophie is starting first grade in two weeks and she’s been practicing her reading every morning at the kitchen island.

Reading and Growing

This morning I found her completely lost in a chapter book - an actual chapter book with paragraphs and everything - and I had one of those mom moments where time just stops.

When did she learn to read real words? I swear last week she was sounding out ‘cat’ and ‘dog’ and now she’s reading about magic trees and adventure. She gets this little crease between her eyebrows when she concentrates, just like Marcus does when he’s working on a design project.

She’s so excited about starting at Salem Elementary. She’s picked out her first-day outfit (twice), organized her new backpack (three times), and asked approximately forty-seven questions about what first grade will be like. Meanwhile I’m over here trying not to cry into my coffee because my baby is becoming a real kid with real thoughts and real books.

Time moves too fast when you’re not paying attention. Good thing I have approximately four thousand photos to prove she was ever this little.
