Turns out mixing Abuela Rosa’s enchilada recipe with Fourth of July planning creates the kind of chaos that ends with everyone in my kitchen arguing about whether cilantro belongs in guacamole. Carmen brought her famous potato salad, Sarah showed up with homemade apple pie, and Jake spent twenty minutes explaining to Alex why his hamburger seasoning technique is ‘revolutionary.’

The enchiladas were the real hit though. Michelle kept asking for the recipe until I finally admitted I’m still learning it myself - some of Abuela’s measurements are more ‘handful of this’ and ‘cook until it looks right’ than actual instructions. But watching everyone gather around our little breakfast bar, passing dishes and stealing bites, felt like exactly what I hoped for when I decided to blend family tradition with friends tradition.

Jake hung a string of lights on our tiny balcony this morning and declared it ‘festive enough for the founding fathers.’ The man has never met a patriotic decoration he didn’t love. But sitting out there later with everyone, watching the neighborhood fireworks start up early, I realized this might be my new favorite way to celebrate - good people, family recipes, and the kind of laughter that carries over to the neighbors.
