The art of compromise

Jake’s been gone for an hour and I’m still sitting here in the middle of our anniversary weekend aftermath - maps, restaurant reviews I printed out, hotel confirmations, and about six different versions of our itinerary scattered across the living room floor.

The art of compromise

What started as ‘let’s plan something special’ turned into a fascinating study of how two people can approach the exact same goal from completely different angles.

I had spreadsheets. Color-coded categories. Backup plans for the backup plans. Jake had a general sense of ‘mountains sound nice’ and complete faith that everything would work out. Somehow we managed to book a perfect weekend that neither of us could have planned alone.

He kept me from over-researching every restaurant within a fifty-mile radius, and I kept us from showing up without reservations anywhere.

The funny thing is, I thought his laid-back approach would drive me crazy, but it actually helped me remember why I wanted to go away with him in the first place. Not because we had the most efficient planning system, but because he makes me laugh when I’m being ridiculous about checking reviews for the third time. And apparently my tendency to research everything made him feel more relaxed about the whole thing, knowing someone was thinking through the details.

Turns out the best anniversary gift might have been learning that our completely different planning styles actually balance each other out pretty well. Even if it did result in enough paperwork to wallpaper the bedroom.
