👩‍⚕️ Elena

Three months later and I’m still thinking about our heating disaster. Not because I miss being freezing cold in the bedroom while sweating in the kitchen - definitely don’t miss that part. But because of how Jake and I handled it together.

We’ve lived together for over a year now, but there’s something different about facing an actual crisis versus just figuring out whose turn it is to buy groceries. When the heat went completely sideways, we didn’t panic or blame each other or wait for the other person to fix it. We just… dealt with it. Jake researching solutions while I called the landlord. Me handling the follow-up emails while he tested different room configurations. Neither of us appointed ourselves the leader or waited to be told what to do.

Processing thoughts the old-fashioned way.

Processing thoughts the old-fashioned way.

I keep coming back to this because it feels like we passed some kind of test we didn’t know we were taking. Not the dramatic kind where couples fight and make up, but the boring, practical kind where you discover you’re actually good at being adults together. That maybe this whole domestic partnership thing isn’t just about splitting rent and deciding what to watch on Netflix.

Probably overthinking a broken heater, but sometimes the small stuff tells you everything you need to know.
