👩‍⚕️ Elena

Cleaning up the last of our anniversary planning papers this morning and I keep thinking about something Jake said yesterday. We’re sitting here with our color-coded lists and backup restaurant options and he goes, “We plan everything like we’re launching a space mission.”

He’s not wrong. But watching how we worked through all the details – him wanting flexibility, me wanting contingencies, both of us somehow finding the middle ground – I realized this is just how we operate. Not just for trips, but for everything. The heating crisis, my nursing school transition, even deciding what to have for dinner. We’re systematic about it in a way that actually works for us.

Mid-conversation about how we actually make decisions together.

Mid-conversation about how we actually make decisions together.

What’s funny is I used to think all the planning and talking through options was just anxiety. Turns out it’s actually how we make sure we’re both heard. Jake needs to know there’s room to be spontaneous, I need to know we won’t end up stranded somewhere without a plan. So we build in both.

Maybe that’s what three years together looks like – not needing less planning, but getting really good at planning together.
