The planning autopsy

👩‍⚕️ Elena

Sitting on the floor with all these anniversary planning notebooks spread around me like evidence from a crime scene.

The planning autopsy

Three months of back-and-forth about restaurants, activities, timing, budgets. Looking at it now, I can see our entire relationship dynamic written in highlighter and sticky notes.

Jake’s pages are all bullet points and backup plans. Mine look like someone exploded a craft store - color-coded tabs, hand-drawn maps, magazine clippings taped everywhere.

The archaeology of our first big celebration together.

The weird thing is how well it actually worked. His logical framework kept my creative chaos from spiraling into decision paralysis. My enthusiasm pushed him past his tendency to overthink every detail into oblivion.

We had exactly one fight during this whole process - about whether to book the fancy dinner or save money for the hiking trip. Lasted maybe twenty minutes before we realized we were both just scared of disappointing the other person. Turns out we’re pretty good at this partnership thing, even when we’re trying too hard.

The weekend itself was perfect, but honestly? These planning sessions might have been my favorite part. Something about mapping out happiness together, even when we disagreed about the route to get there.
