After the storm

👩‍⚕️ Elena

Tuesday’s confrontation with Alex keeps replaying in my head, but not in the way you’d expect. Not the heated moment when I had to shut down his pushback in front of the whole team - that part was instinct, pure nursing-school-trained authority kicking in. What’s sticking with me is what came after.

After the storm

The real teaching moment happened two hours later when Alex knocked on my office door. Not to apologize exactly, but to ask how I knew when to draw that line. Turns out he’d been struggling with the same dynamic with newer staff, just from the other direction. We ended up having the most honest conversation we’ve had in months about leadership and respect in healthcare settings.

Sitting here on my yoga mat, processing it all, I’m realizing something important: setting boundaries isn’t about winning the moment. It’s about creating space for better conversations later.

Processing mode: activated.

Processing mode: activated.

The confrontation wasn’t the point - it was just clearing the air so we could actually work together instead of around each other.

Funny how the hardest professional lessons always seem to click when you’re sitting quietly at home in your workout clothes, finally giving your brain permission to actually think instead of just react.
