What crisis reveals

👩‍⚕️ Elena

Been thinking about our heating situation from a few weeks back. Not the broken thermostat part – though that was its own special kind of December torture – but how we handled it together.

What crisis reveals

What crisis reveals

There’s something about shared problem-solving that strips away all the day-to-day politeness and shows you exactly who you’re dealing with. Jake didn’t once make it my responsibility because “I’m better with landlord stuff” or whatever. I didn’t default to handling it alone because it felt easier than coordinating. We just… figured it out. Together. Like actual partners.

Processing thoughts the old-fashioned way.

Processing thoughts the old-fashioned way.

Writing this down because I want to remember: the way he researched HVAC troubleshooting at 2am without being asked. How I called the landlord three times without getting frustrated at him for not doing it. The way we took turns being the calm one when the other was ready to lose it. This is what I wanted when I pictured living together, but didn’t know how to ask for.

Turns out domestic partnership isn’t about who does what. It’s about both people showing up as actual adults when things break down. Literally and figuratively.
