Problem solving partners

👩‍⚕️ Elena

Two weeks ago when our heating started acting up—blowing cold air one minute, tropical heat the next—I thought we were looking at landlord drama and expensive repair bills.

What I didn’t expect was to discover that Jake apparently has a secret collection of tiny screwdrivers and the patience to actually read instruction manuals.

Watching him methodically work through the thermostat troubleshooting guide while I held the flashlight (and provided completely unhelpful commentary) was one of those weird relationship moments where you realize you’re seeing a whole new side of someone.

Two adults, one manual, zero idea what we're doing

Two adults, one manual, zero idea what we’re doing

Not the dramatic movie version where crisis brings couples together, but the real version where you’re both sitting on the floor at 11pm googling “why does my heat smell like burning socks” and somehow still laughing about it.

Turns out the issue was a loose wire connection that took Jake exactly seven minutes to fix once we stopped overthinking it. But those three hours of trying everything else first? That’s when I realized we’ve gotten really good at being stuck together without getting stuck on each other. Even when one of us is convinced the solution involves unplugging everything and the other wants to call a professional immediately.

The heat’s been perfect ever since, but honestly, the best part was figuring out we make a pretty solid troubleshooting team. Even if Jake’s definition of “quick fix” involves reading the entire manual first and mine involves seeing if turning it off and on again works. Somehow we meet in the middle and actually solve things.
