I’ve been so focused on being collaborative and supportive that I forgot sometimes leadership means drawing hard lines. The way he backed down immediately told me everything I needed to know about whether I’d made the right call.

Writing it all out today, I realized something important: I’ve been treating conflict avoidance like it was professional maturity, when really it was just fear of being disliked. But watching how our team’s energy shifted after that confrontation? How much more productive and respectful our sessions became? That’s what good leadership actually looks like.

Turns out the worst moment taught me the most valuable lesson. Sometimes you have to risk being the bad guy to be the leader people actually need.
