The conversation that changed how I lead
Three days later and I’m still unpacking that whole situation with Alex.

The conversation that changed how I lead
Not the confrontation itself - that part was actually straightforward once I stopped overthinking it. It’s everything that came after that’s been sitting with me.
Turns out there’s a massive difference between being conflict-avoidant and being thoughtful about timing. I spent weeks analyzing Alex’s competitive intensity, watching how it affected the team dynamic, documenting specific incidents. All valid preparation. But somewhere in that process, I convinced myself that more analysis would magically make the conversation easier.

Processing through words. Some conversations replay until you write them down.
Reality check: it didn’t. What made the conversation work wasn’t having the perfect words or the ideal moment. It was finally accepting that good leadership sometimes means having uncomfortable conversations before you feel ready for them. Alex actually thanked me afterward - said nobody had ever given him feedback that direct before, and he respected that I came to him privately first.
Now I’m wondering how many other situations I’ve over-analyzed instead of just… addressing. Professional development looks different when you realize that waiting for confidence might mean waiting forever.
