Well, we officially survived Sophie’s first Christmas morning! And by “survived” I mean we learned that our six-month-old daughter is apparently a minimalist philosopher who believes packaging is superior to products.

She opened exactly zero presents herself (obviously), but she did taste-test approximately seventeen pieces of wrapping paper and conducted a thorough investigation of every cardboard box. The $50 musical toy we agonized over at Target? Completely ignored. The empty diaper box it came in? Pure fascination for twenty minutes straight.

Marcus spent an hour last night assembling some elaborate baby activity center thing, and I’m pretty sure he has two extra screws that he’s just going to pretend don’t exist. “It’s fine,” he keeps saying, while the whole thing wobbles slightly. Sophie doesn’t care - she’s too busy trying to eat the instruction manual.

In other news, I attempted Abuela Rosa’s tamale recipe completely on my own this year and only called Mom three times. Once for the masa consistency, once because I forgot how many chiles, and once to ask if they’re supposed to look like that. They turned out… edible! Which feels like a Christmas miracle in itself. Roberto said they were “almost as good as your mother’s,” which from him is basically a Michelin star.
