Cleaning up all the anniversary planning materials today and found Jake’s note from our heating disaster tucked between my notebooks.

“Called the landlord again. Made coffee. You’re handling this like a champion. - J” Three weeks in February with inconsistent heat, and somehow we came out stronger.

That crisis taught us things about ourselves that a year of normal days couldn’t. Like how I default to problem-solving mode and start making lists, while Jake becomes the practical support person who just quietly handles things. How we both get stressed differently but somehow complement each other perfectly in the chaos.

The planning aftermath - and a sweet discovery

The funny thing is, back then I was so focused on getting the heat fixed that I barely noticed how smoothly we fell into this rhythm. Jake handling landlord calls while I researched space heater efficiency. Me mapping out which rooms stayed warmest while he rearranged furniture to maximize heat flow. No big discussions about roles or responsibilities - we just naturally filled the gaps.

Now, organizing these anniversary plans, I see the same pattern. I’m the researcher and planner, he’s the logistics guy who makes sure things actually happen. It’s not that we can’t do each other’s parts, but we’ve found our sweet spot. Three years in, and we’re finally figuring out what “being a team” actually looks like in practice.
